Epileptic spasms during early childhood has devastating consequences. Its early identification through investigations such as EEG reduces neurodisability and changes the disease course due to early treatment. This particular type of epilepsy, was previously associated with high morbidity, mortality and disability. Now thanks to advances in neuroscience this is becoming increasingly treatable as we have many modalities of investigations. These allow medical professionals to identify the specific conditions that caused them in the first place. There is always an underlying cause for why an infant brain ends up having epileptic spasms. This could be something like birth injury, or inherited disorders of metabolism, many of which increasingly have treatment. Hence investigations such as imaging the brain with techniques like MRI and MR spectroscopy as well as investigations that look at various metabolites in the blood, urine and Cerebro spinal fluid, in affected babies, along with genetic testing, often guide the way forward. Hence investigations are always warranted in Epileptic spasms and help in safe lives, save the brain of the growing infant and thus reduce disability.
Why is it important to investigate Infantile or Epileptic Spasms (West syndrome)
