Gallstone disease extends well beyond straightforward symptomatic cholelithiasis, and the more complex presentations are precisely where dedicated hepatobiliary surgical training makes the most clinical difference. Bile duct stones, where stones have migrated from the gallbladder into the common bile duct, obstruct bile flow and produce obstructive jaundice, and their management requires coordination of endoscopic common bile duct clearance (usually by ERCP) with laparoscopic cholecystectomy, often within the same admission.
