Childhood Asthma and Allergies: A Parent’s Guide to Better Symptom Control

Childhood Asthma and Allergies: A Parent’s Guide to Better Symptom Control

Repeated coughing, wheezing, sneezing or breathing difficulties can affect much more than a child's physical health. Poorly controlled allergy and asthma symptoms may interfere with sleep, school attendance, play and exercise. For parents, understanding the child's triggers and recognising symptoms early can make day-to-day management much easier.

I am Dr. Sindhuja Chennuri, Consultant Pediatrician and Pediatric Allergy & Asthma Specialist, with 12+ years of experience and more than 30,000 patients treated. At Ankura Women and Child, Narapally, Uppal, Hyderabad, I provide specialised consultations for children with allergy, asthma and recurrent respiratory symptoms alongside comprehensive general pediatric care.

How Can Asthma Present in Children?

Asthma is a condition in which the airways become sensitive and inflamed, resulting in recurring respiratory symptoms. The presentation can differ from one child to another.

Parents may notice:

  • Recurrent wheezing
  • Persistent or recurring cough
  • Nighttime coughing
  • Breathlessness during play
  • Chest discomfort
  • Cough after running or exercise
  • Symptoms that repeatedly worsen during infections

Some children may experience long periods without obvious symptoms before another episode occurs.

Understanding the Allergy and Asthma Connection

Allergies and asthma can occur together. A child with an allergic tendency may experience sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, nasal congestion and a recurrent runny nose. In some children, exposure to allergens can also contribute to asthma symptoms.

Potential triggers vary considerably between children. Dust, pollen, environmental pollution, pets, weather changes and respiratory infections are some possible factors.

Rather than assuming every cough is due to infection, I assess the complete symptom pattern and medical history to determine whether an allergic or asthmatic component needs to be considered.

Why Is Good Asthma Control Important?

The goal of childhood asthma treatment is not simply to manage an episode of wheezing. Effective long-term management should allow a child to sleep comfortably, attend school regularly, participate in age-appropriate physical activity and experience minimal disruption from respiratory symptoms.

Depending on the child's symptoms, management may include appropriate medications, inhaler therapy, trigger reduction and regular follow-up.

When inhalers are prescribed, correct technique is particularly important. Parents should understand how and when prescribed medicines should be administered rather than changing or discontinuing treatment without medical advice.

Recognising Signs of Poor Control

Parents should consider reassessment when a child experiences frequent nighttime coughing, repeated wheezing, difficulty participating in physical activities, frequent need for symptom-relieving medication or recurring episodes that require urgent medical attention.

These patterns may indicate that the child's current management needs review.

The Role of Regular Follow-Up

Children grow, their environments change and their respiratory symptoms can change over time. Regular follow-up allows treatment to be reviewed and adjusted according to the child's current needs.

I also encourage parents to discuss concerns about medicines, inhalers, allergies and physical activity during consultations. Understanding the treatment plan can make managing asthma at home considerably easier.

Helping Children Breathe, Play and Grow Confidently

Childhood asthma and allergies can often be managed effectively with appropriate diagnosis, personalised treatment and consistent follow-up. My approach focuses on controlling symptoms while helping children continue their everyday activities with as few limitations as possible.

For child allergy and asthma consultation, general pediatric care, vaccination or follow-up, parents can consult me at Ankura Women and Child, Narapally, Uppal, Hyderabad.
