Pregnancy and Oral Health | Dental Health during Pregnancy- Dr. Deepa Jayashankar | Doctors' Circle

There are  many  patients  who come  to  me  and  ask  me doctor  should I  be  concerned   of  I am pregnant and  I am concerned  about  my oral  health  I will say definitely yes. If you are pregnant you are predisposed to some changes in the body that  is hormonal changes,  which causes  the change and as there are changes in the body. There are change in the oral health.  You are prone  to gingivitis  and it is called as  pregnancy gingivitis  and even if your  oral health is meticulously  maintained   and you are very good  in your brushing and your oral  cavity  clean. Still you  can  observe  some  changes  like swollen  gums, bleeding, tenderness of gums, bleeding on brushing  and pain and all this is  related to hormonal changes. So this is called as pregnancy gingivitis or    enlargement   of  the localized  area of the  gums  is called  as pregnancy tumor that  requires medication. This can be handled by dentists and this should not be neglected, research  has  shown that there is a direct  relation between pregnant  woman having periodontal diseases  to having   a preterm  labor. This  can be  attainted  to the  prostaglandin  rerelease  due to the bacteria  causing gum disease   in pregnant women that  has  shown a  correlation in preterm  labor. So there  are  challenges  when oral health is  concern in pregnant ladies. So  I  would  advise  that if you are  pregnant and if   you notice and change  please  visit  your dentist for oral care.
