When Is IVF Recommended Over Other Treatments?

IVF is not the starting point for every fertility concern, and it is not a treatment I recommend without first reviewing the full clinical picture. In many cases, ovulation induction or IUI is tried first. IVF becomes the recommended pathway when those simpler options are unlikely to succeed, or when the diagnosis makes IVF the most appropriate route from the outset.

I typically recommend IVF when one or more of the following apply:

  • Both fallopian tubes are blocked or significantly damaged
  • Endometriosis has substantially affected the reproductive tract
  • Ovarian reserve is reduced to a degree that makes natural or IUI-assisted conception unlikely
  • Male factor infertility is moderate to severe
  • IUI has been attempted without success
  • Age or diminishing ovarian reserve makes timing critical
  • Preimplantation genetic testing of embryos is clinically indicated
  • Previous fertility treatments have not resulted in pregnancy

The decision to proceed with IVF should always follow thorough investigation, honest discussion about expected outcomes, and consideration of all available options. No two patients arrive at IVF for the same reason, and the treatment approach needs to reflect that which is why I invest significant time in the consultation before any cycle begins.
