This blog post, emphasises the importance of investing in your spine, especially on World Spine Day- a good day to start. It highlights the benefits of proactive spinal care, provides actionable tips for maintaining a healthy spine through posture, regular breaks, and gentle core strengthening, and draws an analogy to financial investment for long-term spinal well-being. Do also read & follow the '7 point Spine Starter Guide' - the followup blog in series on Spine Health.
Hello everyone,
Our spines are the unsung heroes of our daily lives. They support us, allow us to move, and protect our nervous system. We often take them for granted until pain or discomfort sets in.
On World Spine Day, October 16th, I urge you to pause and give your spine the attention it deserves. It's a day to reflect on the vital role your spine plays and to commit to habits that will keep it healthy for years to come.
Why 'Invest' in Your Spine?
This year's theme, 'Invest in Your Spine,' emphasises a proactive approach to spinal health. Instead of waiting for problems to arise and then seeking 'treatment,' we encourage you to view spinal care as a long-term investment, much like your financial savings.
Think about it: small, consistent contributions to your savings account grow over time, securing your financial future. Similarly, small, consistent habits to support your spine will prevent chronic pain and the need for invasive interventions like surgery.
Many of us unintentionally subject our spines to daily stresses. Consider these common causes of spine problems:
- Spending hours hunched over laptops and phones
- Enduring long and stressful commutes
- Maintaining sedentary routines with minimal movement
- Engaging in intense weekend workouts without proper preparation
These factors contribute to spinal strain and can lead to long-term issues. Let's shift our perspective and start investing in our spinal health today.

Actionable Tips for a Healthy Spine
Here are three simple yet effective ways to invest in your spine:
- Make posture a habit, not a correction: Consciously cultivate good posture throughout the day. Ensure your feet are flat on the floor, your back is supported, your screen is at eye level, and your shoulders are relaxed. If you're using a laptop, consider raising it to promote better alignment.
- Set a 'spine timer': Just as you set reminders for other important tasks, set a timer to remind yourself to stand up and stretch every 40β45 minutes. Take a short walk for about 60 seconds to improve circulation and relieve pressure on your spine.
- Build a supportive core gently: A strong core is essential for spinal stability. However, you don't need to jump into intense gym workouts. Focus on gentle core-strengthening exercises that you can incorporate into your daily routine. Pilates and yoga are excellent options.
By implementing these simple strategies, youβre not just treating your spine; youβre actively investing in its long-term health and well-being. This World Spine Day, commit to making these habits a part of your daily life. Your spine will thank you!
My philosophy of treatment β beyond just MRI reports & treatment strategies:
When you come to me, your scans alone do not matter,
What is important is to understand
- How you Sit
- How you Stand
- How you Sleep
- How you work
- How you move
- What your day does to your spine......Every actions matters.
I believe clarity heals anxiety. An explanation on your condition in simple words, outline every option- from conservative methods to advanced surgical interventions, and walk with you through recovery and prevention.
I firmly believe the goal is not just to treat pain, but to help you reclaim confidence in movement, and live your life to the fullest extent.
To Stay Fit & Fine, Spine is Your GoldMine.

Love the investment analogy, Dr. Murali! The βspine timerβ at 40-45 minutes is brilliantly specific and actionable. Your holistic approach β understanding how patients sit, stand, and move β shows you treat the whole person, not just scans. βClarity heals anxietyβ is so true. Thank you for these practical insights!
