Moments: This reflection follows The Journey, not to answer its questions, but to notice life as it unfolds. As part of the While, Trilogy on reflection of life.
Life does not wait for us
It does not pause until we are ready, nor does it arrive once everything is in place. It moves at a steady, indifferent pace, unfolding whether we are paying attention or not. Most of the time, life is happening quietly, in the background, while we are focused elsewhere.
We often believe that life will begin after certain milestones are crossed, after clarity is achieved, stability is secured, or success is defined. Until then, we remain in a transit mode, moving through days without fully inhabiting them. In doing so, we miss what life consistently offers: not destinations, but the true and real ‘Moments’.
Moments are subtle. They do not announce their importance. They arrive without warning, exist briefly, and pass just as silently. A conversation that lingers, a shared understanding, a pause before a decision, a moment of calm, these rarely feel significant when they occur. Yet, they shape us more deeply than the milestones that we often remember.
The most meaningful moments rarely feel dramatic when they occur. They pass softly, unnoticed — unless we’re present.
Working in neurosurgery teaches this early: time does not pause, and moments rarely offer second chances.
Decisions are made in narrow windows, outcomes hinge on presence, and what is missed cannot always be recovered. That awareness extends beyond the operating room. Life, too, moves forward without rewinding itself.
Time continues regardless of our awareness. Relationships change, people drift, routines dissolve - not always because of loss, but because change is inherent to life. The only ‘Constant’ in this universe is CHANGE. We assume continuity where none is guaranteed. We postpone conversations, defer connections, and delay experiences, believing there will be another opportunity. Often, there isn’t.
Achievements and purpose give structure and direction, but they do not anchor us to the present. One can live a full professional life and still remain distant from life itself. Presence is not a reward for success; it is a choice made repeatedly, in ordinary moments.
The destination has always been certain. What remains uncertain, and therefore meaningful - are the moments lived along the way. Not the memories they leave behind, which fade with time, but the experience of being fully there when they occur.
Life does not demand urgency or intensity. It does not ask to be understood or controlled. It simply offers itself - quietly and continuously through everyday moments.
Live it.
Before you leave it.

Nice words Murali.True words, like a poem.Lost moments are still in our memories, often we don't find time to live again through those memories. We should meet at least occassionally old friends to get back those moments. As you correctly said we should balance professional and emotional aspects of lie,not worth being completely mechanical. Thanks for bringing up these thoughts.

Very true, sir. Some moments come only once in life. When we fail to recognize them, all that remains is waiting and uncertainty, not knowing if life will offer them again. A deeply touching reflection.
