Have you noticed blood while brushing your teeth and wondered whether it is something you can simply ignore? Bleeding gums are common, but persistent bleeding may indicate inlammation or an underlying periodontal problem that deserves professional attention. As a Periodontist, I believe that recognising changes in your gums early can make an important difference to your long-term oral health. Gum disease can sometimes progress gradually, which is why timely dental assessment, professional cleaning, appropriate periodontal treatment, and consistent home care are essential for protecting your teeth and their supporting structures.
Why Do Gums Bleed?
One of the common reasons for bleeding gums is plaque accumulation around the gumline. When plaque is not adequately removed, the gums may become inflamed, tender, swollen, or prone to bleeding.
Other factors can also contribute to gum problems, which is why persistent symptoms should be evaluated rather than self-diagnosed.
Signs That Your Gums Need Attention
Look Beyond Bleeding
I encourage patients to pay attention to changes such as persistent gum bleeding, swelling, redness, bad breath, gum recession, or changes around their teeth. These signs may indicate that the gums and supporting tissues require professional evaluation.
In more advanced periodontal disease, deeper spaces or pockets may develop between the teeth and gums, potentially affecting the structures supporting the teeth.
How Is Gum Disease Treated?
Treatment depends on the nature and severity of the periodontal condition. Professional scaling and cleaning may be recommended to remove plaque and calculus. Patients with more advanced periodontal problems may require specialised gum treatment.
In selected cases, periodontal flap surgery may be considered to access deeper areas around the teeth for thorough cleaning and management. Laser-assisted procedures may also have a role in certain dental treatments when clinically appropriate.
Prevention Begins with Everyday Care
Good periodontal health requires teamwork between the patient and dental professional. Brushing effectively, cleaning between the teeth, attending regular dental examinations, and undergoing professional cleaning when recommended can help maintain healthier gums.
As Dr. Prerana G.K., my focus is not simply on treating an existing gum problem but also on helping patients understand how to maintain their periodontal health over the long term.
If your gums bleed repeatedly or you notice persistent changes in your oral health, consider having them professionally evaluated. Addressing periodontal problems at the appropriate time can help protect your gums, support your natural teeth, and contribute to a healthier smile.
