Autism can often be reliably diagnosed from 18 to 24 months of age by an experienced clinician using structured developmental history, observation, and standardised assessment tools. However, many children show clear signs earlier than this, and concerns raised by parents as early as 9 to 12 months should prompt immediate evaluation rather than reassurance to 'wait and see'.
There is no blood test, brain scan, or genetic test that diagnoses autism. Diagnosis is clinical - based on detailed developmental history taken from parents, direct observation of the child's communication and social interaction, and standardised developmental assessments. In some children, additional investigations such as hearing tests, EEG, or genetic tests may be recommended to look for associated conditions, but these do not confirm or exclude autism itself.
The most important message is that earlier assessment leads to earlier intervention, and earlier intervention leads to better outcomes.
