In a world where medicine often feels like numbers, scans, and science, Dr. Vikram brings something beautifully rare to the table — soul. His journey from a small village in Tamil Nadu to becoming a leading neurosurgeon in India is more than a tale of ambition : it's a story of deep-rooted values, unwavering passion, and human connection.
Humble Beginnings, Unshakable Dreams
Dr. Vikram hails from Thuraiyur, a small town near Tiruchirappalli in southern Tamil Nadu. His earliest memories are of watching his father, the town’s first paediatrician, care for children with calm confidence and boundless compassion.
“I’ve seen him treat patients since I was born,” says Dr. Vikram. “He inspired me every single day.”
Though he had the academic merit to pursue engineering — even securing a spot at REC for chemical engineering — medicine had already etched its path in his heart. He chose MBBS at Siddhartha Medical College, Karnataka, where his love for neurosurgery took form during internship.
A Mentor’s Guidance, A Legacy Continued
Dr. Vikram’s neurosurgical foundation was built under none other than Prof. B. Ramamurthy, a pioneer of neurosurgery in India. Training at the Voluntary Health Services in Chennai, he was mentored by a team that believed in precision, discipline, and above all, service.
“Being under Prof. Ramamurthy for three and a half years was life-changing. The values he lived by are with me every time I operate.”
He further trained under Prof. Paresh Doshi in Mumbai for functional neurosurgery, gaining expertise in epilepsy, spasticity, and pain management.
Surgery Meets Soul — And a Bit of Engineering
For Dr. Vikram, neurosurgery isn’t just a discipline — it’s an art form.
“It’s like engineering. You’re a bit of a carpenter, a plumber, a tailor — all rolled into one. Every procedure is handcrafted.”
From microscopic surgeries on delicate nerves to major reconstructions of the spine, his focus is always on restoring not just function, but dignity and quality of life.
A Surgeon’s Day: Precision, Purpose, and People
Now based in Coimbatore, Dr. Vikram practices exclusively at Ramakrishna Hospitals as HOD, Sr. Consultant Neurosurgeon Division of Minimally Invasive Brain and Spine surgery, Department of Neurosurgery | Ramakrishna Hospitals, Coimbatore
, where he oversees a fully equipped neurosurgical center covering the brain, spine, vascular, functional, and paediatric domains.
His day starts at 8 AM sharp, often with complex surgeries that last 4–8 hours. Post-op rounds, outpatient consultations, and emergency calls follow — a demanding schedule, balanced by clarity of purpose.
“We don’t push elective cases into weekends. I want to be available to my patients, but I also need to preserve balance. It helps me serve better.”
Bhairava,
Biking, and Balance
So, how does someone with such a high-stakes role unwind?
For Dr. Vikram, it's about simplicity and connection. Each morning and evening, he walks with his Golden Retriever, Bhairav, named after the loyal guardian of village deities. He cycles. He treks — 16 hills so far, including five Himalayan expeditions with his family. And yes, he rides a Harley Davidson when the road calls.
“When Bhairava welcomes me home, the stress dissolves. That walk resets everything.”
The Scholar Within
Dr. Vikram’s passion doesn’t stop at practice. He continues to publish case-based insights, with recent work presented at national conferences — including an innovative awake craniotomy for trigeminal neuralgia.
The Takeaway: Skill Is Only One Side of the Scalpel
Dr. Vikram’s story is a reminder that medicine is not just knowledge — it’s presence. It’s about showing up with precision in the OR, and with humanity in the ward.
“At the end of the day, it’s not about how many hours I worked. It’s about whether my patient can go home healed with a smile.”
