Dust Mite Allergy Prevention: 8 Tips to Reduce Allergens at Home | Dr. Arathi Karat
In this educational video, Dr. Arathi Karat, Consultant ENT Specialist and Allergy Expert, explains practical dust mite avoidance measures that can help reduce exposure to dust mite allergens and support better indoor allergen control.
🏠 8 Tips to Reduce Dust Mite Allergens at Home
1. Use Dust Mite-Proof Mattress and Pillow Covers
Choose specially designed, tightly woven covers that completely encase your mattress and pillows. These covers help trap dust mites and allergen particles inside.
2. Wash Bedding Weekly
Wash bedsheets, pillow covers and blankets weekly in hot water at a temperature of at least 60°C, as explained by the doctor.
3. Dry Bedding Thoroughly
Sun-dry washed bedding when possible. If sun-drying is not possible, the doctor recommends dry ironing after drying.
4. Limit Soft Toys
Avoid soft toys where possible. If you use them, make sure they are cleaned regularly to help reduce allergen accumulation.
5. Avoid Carpets and Fabric-Upholstered Sofas
These furnishings can collect dust and allergens. Consider reducing their use in your home, particularly in areas where an allergic person spends considerable time.
6. Vacuum Regularly
If carpets or fabric-upholstered sofas are used, vacuum them weekly with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter.
7. Avoid Dry Dusting
Use a damp cloth or a HEPA-filter vacuum cleaner for household cleaning instead of dry dusting, which can stir particles into the air.
8. Take Precautions During Cleaning
People with dust mite allergies should avoid doing the cleaning themselves when possible. If cleaning is unavoidable, Dr. Arathi Karat recommends wearing an N95 mask and protective glasses.
