Are dental implants a surgical procedure? Treatment Steps- Dr. Deepa Jayashankar|Doctors' Circle
Yes, dental implant is a surgical procedure because we are going to drill a titanium screw into the bone in the missing area, and the we are going to fix a prosthetic area or the crown portion of the tooth. The dental implant, which is the screw inside the bone, serves as the root portion of the missing tooth. When we talk about the number of visits for a dental implant, we require diagnostic visit where we are supposed to plan the procedure and are supposed to take couple of investigative scans, x-ray and decide about what are the kind of implants we are going to place in this area, and we will visualize the quality and the quantity of the bone available to us to drill the implant and then we are going to wait and if everything is okay, we are going to wait for 6 to 8 weeks for osseointegration to occur. Osseointegration means this is a foreign body which is drilled into the bone and there is new bone formation around the screw, making this implant a part of your body and once there is initial stability of the amount, we will go ahead and we will place the prosthetic part , that is the missing tooth portion of the implant.
