Dr. Deepa Jayashankar | Appointment booking number: 8088058704,8088052704 Consultant Prosthodontist & Implantologist|ToothFirm-Dental Care & Implant Center, Bengaluru Jaw clicking and popping can be quite a situation for the patients because  whenever the patient  opens and closes, there is   a funny joint  noise, which is quite audible to the patient  and  sometimes  if  you are  actually  sitting close  to a patient who has  a clicking or  a popping, having said that it  comes  with a long history that  whenever a patient has this  kind of  a  click,  the temporomadibular  joint click, it  is  as  a result of  some long term  trauma when the patient  has ignored  because of what happens is there will be some amount of pain and then the pain reduces  because  the temporomadbular  joint has  the ability to adapt  to the  new   situation. Most of the  time  it is  associated  with  pain it is  inflammatory  pain, we  call it  as  discitis,   retrodiscitis or synovitis, and  arthritis where the  particular  temporomadbular  joint  is  put of the socket and  tries  to hit certain areas of the joint space, that is the articular disc and gets  back  into position. So whenever we  examine a patient with a click we  do it with a stethoscope ,  we  hold the  stethoscope   of the patients  temporomandibular  joint and  as the patient   to open, close, open and close,  you  can hear  a distinct click  or  pop of this joint  whenever the  patient  opens and close  but  if it is  associated  with pain, then it  becomes  important to try and give  them some relief  because of the  inflammatory situation of the  joint   but if the pain has  subsided  and  it is only  a  click  or  a popping sound, most  often it is only a click  or  a popping  sound, most  often,  we  do not  intervene  and  do any kind of treatment, we just  make the patient  aware  of the  situation and ask  them  to be  careful and put  them under  evaluation.
