Ovarian reserve refers to the quantity and quality of eggs remaining in the ovaries. It is assessed through blood tests including AMH and FSH, and by counting antral follicles on transvaginal ultrasound. Ovarian reserve declines naturally with age but can also be reduced earlier due to genetics, previous ovarian surgery, or other medical conditions. A low ovarian reserve does not mean conception is impossible, but it does influence the urgency of fertility evaluation and the choice of treatment approach.
