The recovery timeline after laparoscopic cholecystectomy depends significantly on what type of work and activity you are returning to. For desk work or light office activity, most patients are ready to return within a week of their surgery at NiSH Clinic, Jayanagar. Fatigue is normal in the first few days but typically improves quickly. Physically demanding work, jobs that involve lifting, carrying, bending, or sustained physical effort, and heavy exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks to allow the abdominal wall incisions at the laparoscopic port sites to heal fully and to reduce the risk of port site hernia formation. Driving should be avoided until you can perform an emergency stop comfortably and without hesitation due to pain, which is typically around one week after surgery. Walking can be resumed from the first day at home and gradually increased. More vigorous exercise, including running, gym work, and sports, can be reintroduced progressively from the second month. Most patients feel back to their normal level of energy and activity within two to three weeks of laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. If you are uncertain about a specific activity or your work involves particular physical demands, this is a conversation to have at your post-operative review at NiSH Clinic.
