A neonatologist may be consulted when a newborn has poor feeding, inadequate weight gain, jaundice, breathing difficulties, persistent vomiting or abdominal distension, infection concerns, prematurity or low birth weight. Newborns showing sudden changes in activity, feeding or breathing should be medically evaluated promptly.
