Yes, and the benefits for type 2 diabetes specifically are among the most compelling reasons to consider bariatric surgery in patients with obesity.
In many patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity, blood glucose levels normalise within days of gastric bypass surgery — before significant weight loss has occurred. This is a hormonal effect: surgery alters gut hormone signalling in a way that improves insulin sensitivity and reduces hepatic glucose production independently of weight change. The likelihood of sustained diabetes remission is highest in patients who have had diabetes for a shorter duration and who retain better pancreatic function. Sleeve gastrectomy also produces significant diabetes improvement, though typically less dramatic than bypass. Both procedures are discussed in detail based on each patient's diabetes history, current medications, and HbA1c at the time of assessment.
