Can bariatric surgery put type 2 diabetes into remission?

In patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity, bariatric surgery produces diabetes remission or significant improvement in a substantial proportion of cases, often within days of surgery before major weight loss occurs. This reflects hormonal changes that improve insulin sensitivity independently of weight. The likelihood of sustained remission is higher in patients with shorter diabetes duration and better preserved pancreatic function. Outcomes vary and are discussed individually before surgery.
