Bariatric surgery produces benefits across a wide range of obesity-related conditions beyond diabetes:

  • High blood pressure — frequently improves or resolves, reducing or eliminating the need for antihypertensive medication
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea — often remits completely after significant weight loss, with many patients able to discontinue CPAP
  • Joint pain and osteoarthritis — significant improvement as mechanical load on weight-bearing joints reduces
  • Fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH) — liver inflammation and fibrosis frequently improve post-surgery
  • High cholesterol and triglycerides — lipid profiles typically normalise significantly
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome — hormonal improvement and return of regular menstrual cycles in many women
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux — improves after gastric bypass, though sleeve gastrectomy can worsen reflux in some patients
  • The pattern and degree of improvement varies by procedure and individual patient. These benefits are discussed in detail at the pre-operative assessment.
