Dental Implants or Traditional Tooth Replacement: How Do I Help Patients Choose?

Have you lost a tooth and wondered whether a dental implant is really the right solution for you? This is one of the most common questions I encounter in my practice. Missing teeth can affect much more than appearance. Depending on their location and number, they can influence chewing efficiency, speech, bite relationships, and confidence. As a Prosthodontist and Implantologist, my priority is not to recommend the same solution to everyone. Instead, I evaluate the complete oral situation before discussing whether dental implants, bridges, removable prostheses, or another restorative approach may be appropriate.

Understanding Dental Implants

A dental implant is designed to provide support for a replacement tooth or prosthesis by integrating with the jawbone. For appropriately selected patients, implant-supported teeth can provide stability and function while avoiding reliance on adjacent teeth in certain clinical situations. However, implant treatment requires careful planning.

What I Evaluate Before Recommending an Implant

Before considering implant placement, I assess several factors.

Bone and Gum Health

Adequate supporting bone and healthy surrounding tissues are important considerations. When bone volume is insufficient, selected patients may require procedures such as guided bone regeneration or sinus augmentation. My advanced training in GBR, sinus augmentation, and hard and soft tissue management helps me evaluate these situations as part of comprehensive implant planning.

Your Bite and Remaining Teeth

I also consider how the replacement tooth will function alongside the remaining teeth. Prosthodontic planning is particularly important when multiple teeth are missing or extensively damaged.

What About ALL-ON-4?

Some patients with extensive tooth loss ask whether they can replace an entire arch using an implant-supported approach. ALL-ON-4 is one treatment concept that may be considered for appropriately selected patients. I have undertaken advanced training in ALL-ON-4 surgical protocols and immediate function concepts. However, suitability depends on individual anatomy, bone condition, oral health, and several other clinical factors.

My Approach to Implant Treatment

I believe successful implant dentistry begins long before the implant is placed. Planning involves understanding the final desired tooth position, function, aesthetics, supporting tissues, and long-term maintenance requirements. With 27 years of experience in dentistry and extensive training in Prosthodontics and Implantology, my goal is to provide patients with realistic options based on their individual circumstances. Dental implants can be transformative for the right patient, but the best treatment is always the one that is carefully planned for you.
