This is one of the first questions I answer in every full-mouth rehabilitation consultation at Dental Conceptz, and the honest answer is that it varies considerably depending on what the case involves. The range is wide: from around six months for a patient who has adequate bone, does not require implants, and needs comprehensive crowns or veneers to restore a worn dentition, up to eighteen months or more for a patient who needs multiple implants, bone augmentation procedures, and a period of healing between surgical stages before the prosthetic work can begin. The reason for this range is that full-mouth rehabilitation is not one procedure but a coordinated sequence of procedures, each of which must be completed and, in many cases, allowed to heal before the next stage can proceed. If you are having implants placed, the implants require three to six months of osseointegration, the process by which the titanium surface fuses with the jawbone, before they can safely receive the final prosthetic crowns or bridges. If bone augmentation is needed before or alongside the implants, this adds further healing time. The surgical phases are followed by the prosthetic phases: impressions, shade selection, laboratory fabrication of the final restorations, fit appointments, and adjustments. Throughout the treatment period, you will be wearing provisional restorations, which are carefully made temporary crowns or bridges that allow you to function and evaluate the aesthetics at every stage. This provisional phase is not wasted time: it is where the bite is confirmed, the appearance is assessed, and adjustments are made before anything is finalised. The good news is that you are never without teeth during the process. A diagnostic wax-up is a three-dimensional model of your proposed final dental outcome, built in dental wax on accurate plaster casts of your teeth, that is fabricated in the laboratory before a single tooth in your mouth is touched. Think of it as the architectural drawings for your rehabilitation: the finished design, worked out in physical form, before any construction begins. The wax-up takes the information from your clinical assessment, your bite analysis, your X-rays, and your photographs and translates it into a tangible model that shows exactly what the final crowns, veneers, or prosthetic frameworks will look like, how they will relate to each other, and how they will meet in the bite. This serves several important purposes. It allows me to verify, in three dimensions, that the planned treatment is clinically sound: that the proposed restorations have adequate thickness in the right positions, that the bite relationship is achievable with the materials selected, and that the aesthetic proportions are correct. It allows the laboratory to use the wax-up as the reference from which the provisional restorations are fabricated, ensuring that the temporary teeth you wear during treatment are a faithful representation of the planned final outcome rather than an approximation. And critically, it allows you to see, before any treatment begins, what the outcome is working toward. A transfer template made from the wax-up can be used in your mouth to create a mock-up directly on your existing teeth with a temporary material, so you can see the proposed shape and length on your own teeth, in your own face, before you commit to anything. The diagnostic wax-up is the foundation of informed consent in full-mouth rehabilitation: it means that the result you are agreeing to is not an abstract description but a physical model you have seen and approved.
