A cancer diagnosis can bring uncertainty, fear, and many questions for patients and their families. At such a time, having an oncologist who combines clinical expertise with clear communication and a compassionate approach can make the treatment journey easier to navigate. Dr. P. Sasikala, Consultant Radiation Oncologist in Bengaluru, brings over 16 years of experience in Radiation Oncology, with a focus on delivering precise, evidence-based, and personalised cancer care.
Qualifications and professional journey
Dr. Sasikala completed her MBBS from Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, followed by a Diploma in Medical Radiotherapy (DMRT) from the Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar, Chennai. She subsequently completed her DNB in Radiation Oncology from the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi. Her professional journey has given her extensive experience in managing patients who require advanced radiation therapy as part of their cancer treatment.
Areas of expertise
Over the years, Dr. Sasikala has developed expertise in highly conformal and precision radiation techniques. Her key areas of expertise include Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), brachytherapy, and CyberKnife-based radiation planning and treatment. These advanced techniques allow radiation to be delivered accurately to the treatment area while aiming to minimise unnecessary exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
Beyond technology, Dr. Sasikala believes that cancer care requires a collaborative approach. She has participated in multidisciplinary tumour boards, where specialists come together to discuss challenging cases and determine appropriate treatment strategies. Having treated more than 1,000 patients, she understands that every person's cancer journey is different and that patients need not only medical expertise but also information, reassurance, and support throughout treatment.
Academic contributions and recognition
Teaching and academics have also been an important part of her professional career. With several years of teaching experience, Dr. Sasikala has served as a nodal person for the DNB programme and mentored Radiation Oncology residents. She has contributed to scientific research through multiple publications covering areas such as brachytherapy, breast cancer radiotherapy, re-irradiation, telemedicine, and the evolution of cancer care in Karnataka. She has also presented her work at national and international scientific conferences.
Her academic contributions have earned professional recognition, including the Best Paper Award for Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) at the Indian Brachytherapy Society Conference in 2016. More recently, she received the Karnataka Leadership Award, adding another milestone to her professional journey.
Dr. Sasikala's commitment extends beyond the hospital. She has participated in cancer awareness programmes, delivered health talks for corporate organisations, and conducted awareness camps in rural communities across Karnataka.
For Dr. P. Sasikala, Radiation Oncology is not simply about delivering advanced treatment. It is about combining precision, experience, teamwork, and compassionate communication to help patients and their families move through cancer treatment with greater understanding and confidence.
