A fibroadenoma is a common benign breast lump, particularly in younger women. Not every fibroadenoma requires removal. A small, stable, well-characterised fibroadenoma that has been appropriately evaluated with imaging and is not causing significant symptoms may sometimes be safely observed rather than surgically removed. Surgery may be considered when the fibroadenoma is increasing in size, when imaging characteristics prompt uncertainty, when it is causing significant discomfort, when the patient is understandably anxious about leaving it in place, or when a tissue diagnosis is needed. The decision is made individually, taking into account the clinical findings, imaging, and the patient's concerns and preferences.
