In today’s world, many young girls and women are facing a condition called PCOS—or as I like to call it, PCO. It stands for Polycystic Ovary, and it’s much more common than people think.
I’m Dr. Lavanya, a gynecologist who sees many women of all ages every day. And let me tell you—PCO is not a disease to fear, but a condition to understand.
- What is PCO?: Simply put, your ovaries may have more follicles (small fluid-filled sacs) than normal. These ovaries are slightly larger, and because of hormonal imbalance, it causes problems like:
- Irregular periods
- Weight gain
- Acne and oily skin
- Excess facial hair (especially on chin and upper lip)
- Difficulty in conceiving
- Who Gets It?: I see school-going girls with acne, college students upset about weight gain, and working women struggling with periods. PCO doesn’t look the same in everyone. Some women are thin, some are heavy. Some don’t even know they have it until they come for a scan!
- Common Struggles: One of the saddest things I see is when young girls come in tears. They feel shy to go to college because of facial hair or pimples. Some avoid social events. Many feel anxious and lonely. Mothers often don’t understand. Society gives unwanted advice.
But dear women, this is not your fault. Your body is going through a hormonal imbalance. And it can be managed!
- What Can Be Done? The first step is lifestyle change. You don’t need to starve or do fancy diets. Just eat on time, reduce sugar, walk regularly, and sleep well. For those trying to conceive, we help with ovulation medicines or fertility treatments. For skin and hair issues, there are medical options too.
My Message to You: If you have irregular periods, facial hair, or sudden weight gain—don’t ignore it. And don’t feel embarrassed. PCO is very common today, and you’re not alone. With proper care, it can be controlled beautifully.
You are beautiful, strong, and worthy—just as you are. Let’s take care of your body together. One step at a time.
