As a neurosurgeon, I navigate through the collective consciousness, witnessing both the pain and suffering as well as the remarkable optimism and positivity that exist within it. This unique perspective prompts deep philosophical reflection on the meaning of life. In these uncertain and challenging times, I hope my thoughts resonate and bring meaning to our otherwise fast-paced lives, which many of us traverse without taking the time for introspection.
Life is a deeply personal and unique journey, unfolding at the steady, definite, and finite pace of time. Although we often overlook this reality, the pandemic has reminded us of our fragility and vulnerability, despite all our technological and scientific advancements.
Our conscious mind records, celebrates, suffers, and forgets various events as life unfolds. Life inevitably presents challenges, yet it offers us the free will to choose our responses—whether to suffer, accept and move forward, or transform these challenges into opportunities. The choices we make depend on our mental health, the support we receive, our capacity to endure, and our ability to envision the future. However, we are often driven by impulsive actions rooted in our genetics, especially when we feel cornered.
There are times when situations are beyond our control, leaving us as helpless spectators, much like the current pandemic. This raises important questions:
Is there a purpose of life?
What is the destination of this journey?
How significant are we?
The answers to these questions vary depending on the perspective from which we view them. Though different and sometimes contradictory, each answer holds its own truth. From a cosmic perspective, our Earth, solar system, and even the Milky Way are insignificant in the vast universe—mere specks of matter. We may think we own the Earth, but in reality, Nature will revive itself even if humanity ceases to exist. If our species is insignificant, how can any individual be significant? Life will continue its course. In truth, each of us is dispensable. If we are so insignificant, what, then, is the purpose of our lives?
For many, earning money, achieving status, and accumulating wealth are primary goals in life, and there is nothing wrong with that. But how much is enough? When do we stop chasing and start truly living? A happy family and good friends with whom to share precious time, creating cherished memories—could this be the purpose of life? Or is our purpose to care for the previous generation (as our duty) and nurture the next (as our responsibility)? Many seek the purpose of life as their purpose in life.
A parallel and seemingly contradictory truth exists: an individual has the power to bring about significant change, whether in science, commerce, or society—whether for good or ill. One person can spark revolutions, foster development, or cause destruction. Our minds are powerful tools and weapons, and we live within them.
In this journey, the destination is not what matters. It is the cherished memories we create as we traverse time that hold true significance. Life is not about a singular purpose, nor is it solely about moments, memories, or leaving a mark in history. Life is about living to the fullest each and every day. It’s not about carrying the burdens of the past or worrying about the future, for life will always find its path. Make every day count! Life is a gift. To live without regrets, we must do what we enjoy and enjoy what we do.
