Growing up in Northeast India, I always felt a profound responsibility a calling to ensure that no child’s life was lost due to lack of advanced, compassionate care. Over the years, I have dedicated myself to advancing pediatric critical care in this region, transforming it from a nascent specialty to a beacon of hope for countless families. Today, I want to share some of my journey, stories, and insights that drive my passion for leading change in child survival and excellence.
A Region with Challenges but Boundless Potential
Northeast India is a beautiful and culturally rich region, but it has historically faced healthcare challenges limited infrastructure, resource constraints, and a shortage of specialized pediatric critical care services. Many children with life-threatening conditions neonatal sepsis, respiratory failure, or metabolic crises would often not receive the timely, expert intervention they desperately needed. I realized early on that the solution was not just about setting up facilities but about building a dedicated team, training local healthcare providers, and fostering a culture of excellence rooted in compassion and innovation.
Transforming Neonatal and Pediatric ICU Care
Joining Pratiksha Hospital as a senior consultant, I focused on establishing a comprehensive Neonatal and Pediatric ICU equipped with modern ventilators, advanced monitoring systems, and protocols aligned with international standards. I recall a young 3-week-old baby, Priya, who arrived in respiratory distress due to severe pneumonia. The care team, guided by my protocols, intervened swiftly with high-flow oxygen therapy, antibiotics, and close monitoring. Priya’s recovery was a testament to how expertise and timely action can save even the most fragile lives.
Every child like Priya fuels my commitment. I believe that each intervention, no matter how complex, is an opportunity to make a difference. Training local doctors and nurses—empowering them with skills in neonatal resuscitation, ventilator management, and sepsis care is vital. It’s about creating a ripple effect, ensuring that excellence isn’t confined to a single hospital but spreads across the community.
Innovation and Research: Elevating Standards of Care
Leading pediatric critical care in a region like ours requires continual innovation. I am actively involved in research, publishing studies on neonatal outcomes and infectious disease management that influence practice nationwide. Recently, we focused on reducing neonatal mortality by implementing early detection protocols for metabolic and respiratory crises. The results have been promising, showing that with focused effort and adherence to evidence-based practices, we can dramatically improve survival rates.
Inspiring Hope in Every Family
Beyond technology and protocols, what keeps me going are the heartfelt stories of families whose children I’ve been privileged to help. One such story is of Ramesh, a 6-month-old born prematurely with congenital renal issues. His family, overwhelmed and anxious, found hope in our team’s comprehensive care, including neonatal dialysis and nutritional support. Seeing Ramesh grow stronger each day reinforces my belief that regional centers of excellence are the future of pediatric care in Northeast India.
A Vision for the Future
My vision is simple yet ambitious: to build a network of pediatric critical care centers that serve as sanctuaries of hope across Northeast India—combining state-of-the-art technology, expert clinicians, and compassionate care. I am committed to mentoring the next generation of pediatricians and intensivists, sharing my knowledge and passion, so they can carry forward this legacy of care.
Inspiring Action and Compassion
Leading pediatric critical care is a journey of continuous learning, relentless compassion, and unwavering hope. Every child saved, every family comforted drives us to do more. If we combine our efforts, innovation, and heart, I believe Northeast India can become a beacon of excellence in child health—saving lives, transforming communities, and building a healthier future for our children.
Because in the end, the greatest gift we can give is the promise of a healthier, brighter tomorrow for every child.
