Throughout my career in diagnostic laboratories, academic institutions, and accreditation programmes, I have consistently observed that the most successful healthcare organisations are not necessarily those with the most advanced equipment — they are those that consistently follow quality-driven processes. A culture of quality reduces errors, improves efficiency, and ultimately benefits patients.

Why is patient safety the most important outcome of quality management?

One of the most important benefits of quality management is enhanced patient safety. Medical errors can occur at various stages of healthcare delivery — diagnosis, laboratory testing, medication administration, and treatment planning. By implementing standard operating procedures, regular audits, staff training, and quality checks, healthcare organisations can significantly reduce the likelihood of errors and improve clinical outcomes.

In diagnostic laboratories, quality management is particularly critical. Laboratory reports influence a large proportion of clinical decisions. Maintaining quality throughout the testing process — from sample collection and processing to reporting and interpretation — ensures that patients and clinicians can rely on laboratory results with confidence.

What role do NABL and NABH accreditation play?

Accreditation standards such as NABH for hospitals and NABL for laboratories provide structured frameworks for maintaining excellence.
