Pollution and Allergic Rhinitis: How to Protect Yourself

Pollution and Allergic Rhinitis: How to Protect Yourself

Air pollution is a major trigger for allergic rhinitis, especially during smog-heavy months. Smog contains tiny pollutant particles that irritate the nose, eyes, and airways, worsening sneezing, nasal blockage, runny nose, cough, and breathing difficulty. Children, the elderly, and individuals with asthma or allergies are particularly vulnerable.

How Smog Affects You

  • Irritates the nasal lining, worsening allergy symptoms
  • Increases the risk of sinusitis and bronchitis
  • Triggers wheezing and asthma attacks
  • Reduces overall lung function with long-term exposure

Protect Yourself During High Pollution Days

  • Stay indoors during early morning and late evening when pollution peaks
  • Keep windows closed and avoid outdoor exercise
  • Use N95 or KN95 masks when stepping outside
  • Prefer indoor areas with clean, filtered air

Improve Indoor Air Quality

  • Use HEPA-based air purifiers in bedrooms and living spaces
  • Maintain good ventilation during low-pollution hours
  • Reduce indoor dust by regular cleaning and vacuuming
  • Keep indoor plants if tolerated (avoid for highly allergic individuals)

Medical Management

  • Continue your allergy medications (antihistamines, intranasal steroids) as advised
  • Start preventive treatment early in the smog season
  • For persistent symptoms, consult your doctor about:
  • Saline nasal irrigation
  • Leukotriene modifiers
  • Allergen immunotherapy (if indicated)

 When to Seek Medical Help

  • Symptoms lasting more than 2 weeks
  • Difficulty breathing or persistent wheeze
  • Recurrent sinus infections
  • Poor sleep or reduced daily activity due to nasal symptoms
