Conditions and Treatments

expertise
Epilepsy Surgery

Epilepsy surgery is recommended for patients with drug-resistant seizures that significantly affect daily life. Under the expertise of Dr. Ramesh Doddamani, treatment involves advanced procedures such as lesionectomy, temporal lobe surgery or disconnection techniques, guided by neuroimaging and electrophysiology to precisely target the seizure-producing area and achieve long-term seizure control.

expertise
Spasticity due to Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, or Spinal Cord Injury

Spasticity caused by stroke, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord injury is treated by Dr. Ramesh Doddamani using intrathecal baclofen therapy, selective dorsal rhizotomy, or neurotomy. These interventions relieve muscle stiffness, enhance mobility, and reduce pain, enabling patients to regain independence and improve functional outcomes in daily activities.

expertise
Neuro-Oncology

Neuro-oncology focuses on diagnosing and treating brain and spinal cord tumors, including gliomas, meningiomas and metastatic lesions. Under Dr. Ramesh Doddamani’s expertise, treatment involves advanced microsurgical tumor removal, neuro-navigation, electrophysiology-guided surgery and multimodal care with oncology teams to improve survival, preserve neurological function and enhance long-term quality of life.

Stereotactic radiofrequency thermocoagulation of hypothalamic hamartoma

Treatment options for hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) include microvascular surgery, stereotactic radiofrequency thermocoagulation (SRT), laser interstitial thermal therapy, or Gamma Knife surgery. During SRT, thermographic monitoring cannot be performed and therefore highly accurate placement of electrode and confirmation of its position are required. We have used robotic guidance (ROSA) and coregistered it with O-arm for performing ablation of hamartoma.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the risks and benefits of epilepsy surgery?

Benefits: Many patients experience a significant reduction in seizures, and some may become seizure-free, improving quality of life and independence.

Risks: As with any brain surgery, there are potential risks, including infection, bleeding, neurological deficits, or memory and cognitive changes. Careful pre-surgical evaluation helps minimize risks, and ongoing follow-up ensures optimal recovery and management.

What is epilepsy surgery and who is eligible for it?

Epilepsy surgery is a medical procedure aimed at controlling or reducing seizures in patients whose epilepsy does not respond to medications (drug-resistant epilepsy). Candidates for surgery typically undergo thorough evaluation, including EEG monitoring, brain imaging (MRI), and neuropsychological tests to identify the seizure focus. Surgery is considered when removing or modifying the affected brain area can significantly reduce seizure frequency or severity.

How is spondylitis diagnosed and treated?

Diagnosis involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests for inflammatory markers, and imaging like X-rays or MRI.

Treatment focuses on:

Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce pain and swelling

Physical therapy and exercises to maintain mobility

Lifestyle modifications, including posture improvement and regular activity

In severe cases, biologic medications or surgery may be recommended

What is spondylitis and what are its common symptoms?

Spondylitis is inflammation of the spine that can cause chronic back pain and stiffness. Common symptoms include:

Persistent lower back or neck pain, often worse in the morning or after inactivity

Stiffness that improves with movement or exercise

Reduced flexibility in the spine

Fatigue and, in some cases, swelling in other joints

How is a stroke diagnosed and treated?

Stroke diagnosis involves a neurological examination, brain imaging (CT or MRI scans), and blood tests to determine the type and cause.

Treatment depends on the stroke type:

Ischemic stroke: Clot-busting medications (thrombolytics) or mechanical clot removal

Hemorrhagic stroke: Surgery or procedures to stop bleeding and reduce pressure in the brain

Early medical intervention is crucial to minimize brain damage and improve recovery outcomes.

What are the common signs and symptoms of a stroke?

A stroke often occurs suddenly and requires immediate medical attention. Common signs include:

Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side

Difficulty speaking or understanding speech

Sudden vision changes in one or both eyes

Severe headache with no known cause

Loss of balance, dizziness, or difficulty walking

Remember the acronym FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services.
